Go Without Your Phone to Give Clean Water to Children in Need

UNICEF is no stranger to making the world a better place, and this time they are back at it with the 8th annual edition of the “Tap Project” (click the logo to visit website). The Tap Project is working to help the over 760M people around the world gain access to clean water – an often overlooked issue. In fact, UNICEF estimates that around 1,400 children die daily due to water-borne diseases and lack of sanitation - a staggering figure in today’s day and age.

This is a great effort on behalf of UNICEF to draw attention, with clever use of technology, to an issue so many of us take for granted – clean water. For every 10 minutes a user does not touch his/her phone, a UNICEF partner (e.g. Giorgio Armani) will provide one day of clean water for a child in need. It’s like a fast, but with a mobile phone. All you have to do to donate is download the app on your smartphone.

By making the challenge seem so dead simple, the people behind the Tap Project have played into human psychology in the digital era where mobile devices are an increasingly important part our lives. It really helps put things in perspective.

Firstly, it offers one the opportunity to make the world a better place by literally doing nothing; no volunteering, hard work, cooking, cleaning or planting required. Secondly, it brings attention to how frequently smartphone users are compelled to check their phone, even if there isn’t a single notification of an incoming call, text message or social media update. Truth be told we depend on our phones to help manage our lives, sometimes we couldn’t imagine life without it… But take a minute and think of life without the most basic necessity, water. We highly encourage you to take the challenge!
